Biomodelling for cranio-maxillofacial reconstruction: patient specific aesthetic, functional and affordable biomaterial implants and prostheses

This project incorporates the design and fabrication of patient specific implants using locally synthesized biomaterials. It involves a multidisciplinary team from different background such as surgeons, biomaterial engineers and scientist, community health expert, computer scientists, and economists from School of Dental Sciences, School of Medical Sciences, School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, and School of Mineral and Material Engineering, USM. This research also involves international linkages such as University Hasselt, Belgium, Maastricht University, The Netherlands, Lincoln University, New Zealand, and London Metropolitan University. The team aims to fabricate patient specific aesthetic, functional and affordable biomaterial implants and prostheses. The project focuses on 3 major areas: (a) The bio modelling for cranio-maxillofacial reconstruction, (b) synthesis of new PMMA – HA nano composite for implants and prostheses, and (c) prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with cranio-maxillofacial defects.
