Fundamental & Clinical Neurosciences Research

As an interdisciplinary Department with numerous research-oriented and professional postgraduate degrees on offer since 2001, the environment for this Cluster at the USM School of Medical Sciences promotes the integration of multiple fields primarily in medical, health and allied health sciences within the spectrum of research that our researchers undertake. This integration closely reflects the various research interests of our researchers, both in Fundamental & Clinical Neurosciences (Neurology & Neurosurgery).

Our research encompass arrays of contemporary obscure questions involving the nervous system, both in health and disease, involving cell lines, animal models and human subjects. These include physio-pathological understanding and therapeutic manoeuvres of brain tumour (gliomas), epilepsy and neuromuscular diseases unique to the tropics, neurophysiology of learning and memory with phytochemical exploration of indigenous plants (such as Centella asiatica and Mitragyna speciosa) and signal processing in cognitive neuroscience of behaviours and emotions, neural stem cell biology, addiction neurobiology of emerging phytochemical, understanding the epidemiology, disease mechanisms and therapeutic modalities of acquired nervous tissue injuries (stroke, brain infections, traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries), intracranial and spinal cord invasive manipulations (deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease; epilepsy surgery and endoscopic approaches), with active participation in the national and international multicentre clinical trials for various nervous system disorders. These research initiatives are supported by the available research tools and infrastructures including imaging (brain structural/functional scan, tissue confocal microscopy), electrophysiological cellular recording, magnetoencephalography (MEG), electroencephalography (EEG) and dedicated laboratories (neurophysiology, genetic and tissue culture), with national and international collaborations.

We also actively collaborate with diverse other disciplines including psychiatry & mental health, psychology, paediatrics, pathology, genetics, speech and audiology, pharmacology, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, business, arts and many more. Central to the body of our academic brain research is the goal of mitigating the devastating societal impact of brain diseases and improving the quality of life of those affected individuals, their families and communities at large.

Our unique setting, rivals only by few similar others in the country, simply showcase that Neuroscience @ USM School of Medical Sciences is all about people, intricate and versatile.
