Natural Product Anti-Cancer Research
Natural Product Anti-Cancer Research |
|
Many problems associated with current cancer treatment options have hindered its overall therapeutic success rate. Although chemotherapy is the main treatment modality, it is faced with major drawbacks such as reduced drug efficacy, development of drug resistance in cancer cells and undesired side effects on normal cells. The search for more effective and more tolerable alternative drugs for cancer treatment is continuing and natural products serve as an important source of good lead compounds suitable for pharmaceutical development. This young research group focuses on natural product-based drug discovery for oncology. Activities of this group include identification of anticancer Malaysian natural products for component standardization or compound isolation and characterization with detailed understanding of their mechanisms of action for potential development as pharmaceutical grade drugs or as adjuvants for current therapy. A couple of potential standardized fractionated extracts and compounds have shown excellent anti-cancer activities with negligible effects to normal cells. | |
