Pharmacogenetics And Novel Therapeutics Research
Pharmacogenetics And Novel Therapeutics Research |

Pharmacogenetics is the study of how genes affect the way people responds to medicines. The ultimate goal of pharmacogenetics research is to tailor medicines to people's unique genetic make-ups and this forms the basis of personalized medicine. One of the major sources of variation in drug response is due to drug metabolism which is a result of genetic variations in the liver’s oxidizing enzymes (cytochrome P450). Since early 2000, members of the Cluster have studied the genetic polymorphism of cytochrome P450s in the ethnically diverse Malaysian population and have discovered that drug metabolizing enzymes polymorphism to be very heterogeneous. Current research interest of the cluster is on the importance and impact of pharmacogenetics in HIV/AIDs and related co-infections and substance abuse. | |
