Long before the availability of Modern or Western medicine in the country, the local peoples rely solely on Traditional Medicine for treatment of diseases and maintenance of their health. Western medicine was introduced to the country by the British during the colonization. Modern medicine has contributed significantly to the wellbeing of the people however some of the chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, inflammatory joint diseases and cancer were found to show benefits when complemented with Traditional Medicine such as the use of herbal or bee hive products, massage and acupuncture. Bee hive products include honey, royal jelly, propolis, bee pollen/bee bread, bee venom etc. Our team have conducted a number of studies on Malaysian jungle (Tualang) honey in vivo an in-vitro, in tissue culture, in animals and in human. These studies include the physicochemical properties, biological properties such as its anti-bacteria, anti-cancers, antioxidants, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anti-ageing, anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties. We have also conducted a number of randomized clinical trials to evaluate the efficacy of honey and bee hive products as wound dressing, anti HIV, as supplements to enhance athletes’ sporting activities and reducing symptoms of postmenopausal women. The outcome of the studies so far revealed that Tualang honey has strong medicinal properties and could be considered as complementary medicine for the treatment for a myriad of diseases. We welcome collaboration in this exciting area of research. | |
