Typhoid And Enteric Diseases

Typhoid And Enteric Diseases

This cluster focuses on the discovery of biomarkers in the pathogenesis of enteric diseases especially for typhoid, paratyphoid and dysentery and the translation of these discoveries into diagnostics. Biomarker discovery requires fundamental research using molecular biology tools like DNA sequencing, antibody engineering, molecular modelling and protein crystallography. The discovery of specific biomarkers enables the development of innovative diagnostics tools and tests that can be used in low resource settings. The main aim of the cluster is to provide sustainable and affordable solutions on communicable diseases to the neglected population. This cluster has also created many success stories for USM, the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) through its research and development mechanism as well as for the broader bio-diagnostics industry in Malaysia via commercialization of its protein and DNA based kits.
